"Tuma" Primitivo Puglia IGT 2021
IGT Puglia, Puglia, Italy
100% Primitivo | 14.5% ABV
We are delighted to offer this Italian red wine made from 100% Primitivo grapes. Primitivo is one of Europe's oldest grapes. Though it is thought to come from Croatia, Puglia has become its spiritual home. This full-bodied red is persistent with notes of liquorice, ripe red fruits, and a gentle amount of tannins on the finish.
This wine exudes a palate of freshly crushed red and black berries paired with cocoa, liquorice, and a whiff of spice.
Service: Serve at 16-18°C.
Food Pairing: Excellent with savoury dishes, braised and roasted meats, semi-aged cheeses, spicy, and herb-seasoned foods.
Winemaker, Valentino Ciarla, produces wines that are refined, fresh and juicy with just the right amount of depth.
"We are not large volumes producers. We are a family owned single estate winery with the maximum dedication to quality production and environmental balance. We respect our territory with organic farming, aiming to achieve the best quality from our grapes. We have worldwide collaborations with selected partners who search people behind a label, and are eager to share people’s work and dreams with a bottle of wine" Says Valentino.
Masseria Cuturi is an exclusive property of 300 hectares located in Manduria, consisting of 40 hectares of vineyards, 500 centenary olive trees, woods, and an exclusive mix of ancient archaeological remains, and an elegant Masseria built between the late 1700s and the early 1800s.
The Conca d’oro, whose toponym derives from the fertility of its soils, rich in water, with the presence of five artesian wells and two natural sources have made this land particularly generous and productive: a true Eden.
The current vineyard of about 40 hectares enjoys the microclimate of the secular forest of Cuturi, a protected nature reserve on the eastern Salento coast. The soils are deep and soft and are very rich in organic matter. To avoid excessive plant vigor, they sow grasses to oxygenate the roots of the vines and create healthy competition.
They follow an organic cultivation based on safeguarding the natural organic substance of the soil, trying to enhance biodiversity as much as possible.
1* Sustainability Rating: Up & Coming
Masseria Cuturi, nestled in the heart of Puglia, Italy, is a family-owned vineyard. Since its establishment in 2007, the vineyard has dedicated itself to organic principles and currently holds an Organic Certification from ICEA, showcasing its commitment to environmental stewardship.
Spanning 40 hectares, with 15% devoted to vines and a significant 50% maintained as natural woodland, Masseria Cuturi produces an average of 650 hectolitres per year. The vineyard's approach to winemaking includes the use of natural yeast, controlled fermentation temperatures, and a focus on preserving the freshness and fruitiness of the wine.
Sustainability is at the core of Masseria Cuturi's operations, with the vineyard utilising solar panels to reduce power impact and adopting lighter glass bottles and recyclable materials like Nomacorc to decrease carbon emissions. The vineyard also has a strong program for the reuse of grape remnants post-vinification, contributing to compost and plant protection, and limits mechanical aid to a minimum.
In the next decade, Masseria Cuturi aims to manage its vineyards with minimal waste, striving to produce the highest quality while developing production to meet their target numbers. The unpredictable effects of climate change, maintaining the style of their elegant and territorial wines, and boosting hospitality are the primary challenges they face in achieving long-term viability.
In terms of biodiversity, the vineyard promotes native plants and engages in local conservation projects. Soil health is regularly monitored and enhanced through organic practices, and the vineyard strictly adheres to organic pest management, rarely using copper sulphate and minimising sulphur application.
Masseria Cuturi's winemaking philosophy is characterized by moderate maceration to reduce extraction during skin contact, logical wood use, and a preference for low residual sugar in their wines. They utilise wild, selected native, and organic or biodynamic yeasts and keep sulphur dioxide additions below 50 mg per litre.
The vineyard is powered by electricity, currently from a standard contract of mixed sources, and aims to apply for Fair Trade certification in the future. Although their buildings' energy efficiency is at 50% and the sustainability of their packaging at 70%, these are areas Masseria Cuturi is likely to improve upon.
With an active but occasional participation in the community and a sourcing strategy that prioritises ethics, Masseria Cuturi ensures fair wages and safety measures for all staff members. The vineyard is led by a female CEO and General Manager, providing strong female representation in its direction.
As an up-and-coming vineyard with a 1* sustainability rating, Masseria Cuturi has laid a solid foundation for sustainability. With some basic objectives in place and periodic monitoring of progress, Masseria Cuturi is poised to become an even more significant player in the sustainable wine production of Puglia and we expect them to move up into 2* during their next review.

Vinification: Grapes are harvested at its best time in mid September. A seven-day maceration at controlled temperatures between 22° – 28°C, in which the skins give colour, aromas and tannins to the must, precedes the alcoholic fermentation in steel vats. This second fermentation, always in steel tanks, makes Tumà more rounded and pleasant. Tumà spend three months in steel tanks.
